Where we came from
“I ka wa ma mua, I ka wa ma hope,” Hawaiians have always understood the importance of looking to one's past and ancestral knowledge to guide them with how to approach the future. Upon arriving on the islands, Hawaiians knew that to be sustainable for generations to come, they had to respect and mālama the land by treating it as a living being chief, “he ali‘i nō ka ‘āina, ke kauwā wale ke kanaka.” Ancestral knowledge teaches us that we must live in harmony with nature's cycles and remember our integral part in the well-being of our ecosystem.
Where we are now
I Nui Ke Aho brings communities together through education, the basis of empowerment for moving our community forward.
“E aloha kekahi i kekahi,” love from one to another. Together, we are building our classroom and learning traditional voyaging practices. We host regular community sail days and work days when we gather to teach, learn, and have fun. It is through our programs that we empower our communities and keiki o ka ʻāina in becoming stewards of the ʻāina and kai. |
Where are we going
Nā Moku o Wānana Paoa are the two small islands in front of the bay of Waimea. These two mokupuni are the geographical marker for land division of the moku of Waialua and Koʻolauloa. I Nui Ke Aho’s double hull sailing canoe and education program, Wānana Paoa, was named after the mokupuni with the vision of bringing the two North Shore moku together. Wānana meaning a prophecy. A prophecy for change. Paoa is a name found here in Hawaiʻi and throughout the Pacific; one of the original voyagers who braved the wind and seas to connect the sea of islands that make up the Pacific nation. Paoa is an ʻohana of the sea and for the sea. This ʻohana reminds us that we are from the sea and we must care for it because the sea feeds the land, no ke kai kā hoʻi ua ʻāina.
Ultimately, I Nui Ke Aho is pursuing an intimate Hawaiian immersion program for all keiki of pae ʻāina o Hawaiʻi based out of the North Shore of Oʻahu. It will integrate initiatives taking place mauka to makai. We pursue this immersion program with a goal to shift priorities and mindsets concerning our relationship with our one hānau, and return to supporting the land so it may properly support us.
